Edwin, The Other Brother

Before the Barrymores, there were the Booths - father and sons…the First Family of American Actors. And of all the Booths, there was Edwin, "The Prince of Players." Born near Baltimore, Maryland to a talented but flawed father, Edwin Booth had, by the 1860's, eclipsed his famous father, his own talented brothers and every other American actor to stand, unchallenged, as the foremost player of his generation. His performances in Richard III, Othello and Hamlet were hailed as triumphs. His 100-night run as the Prince of Denmark was a milestone in the history of American theatre. Edwin Booth would, it seemed, become the most revered actor the young republic had ever known. And then, in 1865 everything changed - appropriately enough, in a theatre.
