Robert Mills, Architect

Robert Mills is known as the first native-born American architect; in fact, he often spoke of himself that way! Though born in Charleston, South Carolina, he spent much of his life away from the city he loved so much, making his fortune and establishing himself in Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Mills (1781-1855) studied under the great architects of his day, James Hoban, architect of the White House; Thomas Jefferson, who gave the young South Carolinian access to his library; and Benjamin Henry Latrobe. His development as an architect, builder and engineer mirrors the development of a new national awareness of America as separate from its European roots. Though looking to the classical traditions for his inspiration, Mills came to believe that American public architecture should express American ideals and aspirations. His projects gave the new republic a public face and a strong public image.
